Sarasota Archery Academy’s X-Ring Program provides USA Archery NTS-certified coaching in Sarasota, Florida for ages 8 and up. Indoor vs. Outdoor Formats
USA Archery competitive archery takes two primary formats, and Sarasota Archery Academy trains athletes in both.
Indoor 18-Meter: This format emphasizes precision. Athletes shoot at 18 meters (59 feet) at a 3-spot target face, firing 60 arrows per end. The tight scoring — with the X-ring (innermost scoring zone) counting separately — rewards perfect form and mental consistency. Florida’s indoor season typically runs November through February. Indoor competition is where technical foundations are tested in a controlled environment.
Outdoor 720-Round: This is the Olympic-distance format. Youth typically shoot at 60 meters; seniors at 70 meters (the Olympic distance). The 720-round means archers shoot 72 arrows for a maximum 720 points. Outdoor competition introduces environmental factors — wind, sun angle, footing — and tests an athlete’s adaptability. Youth Development: From JOAD to Olympic
USA Archery’s youth pipeline is called JOAD — Junior Olympic Archery Development. JOAD archers, typically ages 8–18, compete in age-appropriate divisions and track their progress through levels. The top JOAD archers feed into Junior National Teams, and from there, elite archers pursue Olympic Trials and international representation.

USA Archery Competitive Formats

Indoor 18-Meter (3-Spot)
Precision is paramount at 18 meters. Athletes shoot at a 3-spot target face, firing 60 arrows in timed ends. The X-ring (the innermost 10-ring zone) counts separately, rewarding tight groups and flawless form. The controlled indoor environment eliminates wind and weather, isolating the shooter’s technique.
Florida Season: November–February. Venue: Indoor facility. State Event: Florida Indoor State Championship.

Outdoor 720-Round
The 720-round is the Olympic-distance format. Youth archers typically shoot at 60 meters; seniors and national-level athletes shoot at 70 meters (the Olympic distance). NTS-Certified Coaching at Sarasota Archery Academy
Rob Gilbert holds a USA Archery Level 3 NTS certification — the highest coaching level in the USA Archery system. Our entire coaching staff is USA Archery certified.

Structured USA Archery Training for Competitive Athletes
Named for archery’s most precise scoring zone — the X-ring — this program is built for athletes who want to compete, not just shoot.
Who It’s For: Athletes ages 8 and up, youth through adult. No prior archery experience required. What matters is coachability, discipline, and the desire to compete in USA Archery format.
What Training Involves: Form fundamentals grounded in NTS coaching, development of a repeatable shot cycle, competition preparation, mental game training, and equipment tuning. You’ll shoot indoors (18-meter) year-round and train for outdoor (720-round) competition in spring and summer.
Where You’ll Compete: Our primary targets are the Florida Indoor State Championship and Florida Outdoor State Championship. Top athletes may advance to regional and national events. Whether you’re in Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice, Lakewood Ranch, or North Port, you’ll be competing alongside archers from across southwest Florida.
Investment: $200 per month. This covers unlimited practice sessions Monday and Thursday, 5–8PM at our Sarasota facility, plus coaching, equipment guidance, and competition preparation. USA Archery indoor competition uses a 3-spot target face at 18 meters. Archers fire 60 arrows in timed ends (typically 3-4 arrows per minute), targeting the innermost rings for maximum points. The X-ring (the very center zone within the 10-ring) counts separately from the 10-ring, rewarding precision. A perfect score indoors is 600 points (if all 60 arrows are 10s) or higher if all arrows are X-rings.
