What Is USA Archery?

USA Archery is the national governing body for Olympic-style target archery in the United States. Recognized by the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, USA Archery oversees competitive archery at every level — from youth development through elite international competition. If you’re searching for USA Archery training in Florida, you’re looking for instruction in the sport’s most technical, Olympic-aligned format.

Unlike 3D or field archery, USA Archery focuses on precision target shooting at standardized distances and formats. The sport demands perfect form, mental discipline, and consistency under pressure. Athletes who train under the USA Archery system develop repeatable techniques that scale from local Florida competitions all the way to the Olympic Games.

The National Training System (NTS)

At the core of USA Archery coaching is the National Training System (NTS) — a biomechanics-based framework developed by USA Archery to standardize archery technique across all certified coaches. The NTS breaks the archery shot into a precise sequence: stance, nocking, drawing, anchoring, aiming, and release. Each phase has technical standards based on sports science. For a deeper breakdown of how we apply NTS in practice, see our archery coaching methodology.

When you train under NTS-certified coaches in Sarasota, you learn the same technique framework used by USA Archery national teams. This consistency matters. Athletes without proper form often develop bad habits that collapse under competition pressure. NTS training builds a repeatable shot cycle that holds together whether you’re shooting in practice or at the Florida state championship.

Sarasota Archery Academy’s head coach, Rob Gilbert, holds a USA Archery Level 3 NTS certification — the highest coaching credential in the system. All our coaches are USA Archery Level 2 or Level 3 certified, meaning every athlete receives instruction grounded in the national standard.

Indoor vs. Outdoor Formats

USA Archery competitive archery takes two primary formats, and Sarasota Archery Academy trains athletes in both.

Indoor 18-Meter: This format emphasizes precision. Athletes shoot at 18 meters (59 feet) at a 3-spot target face, firing 60 arrows per end. The tight scoring — with the X-ring (innermost scoring zone) counting separately — rewards perfect form and mental consistency. Florida’s indoor season typically runs November through February. Indoor competition is where technical foundations are tested in a controlled environment.

Outdoor 720-Round: This is the Olympic-distance format. Youth typically shoot at 60 meters; seniors at 70 meters (the Olympic distance). The 720-round means archers shoot 72 arrows for a maximum 720 points. Outdoor competition introduces environmental factors — wind, sun angle, footing — and tests an athlete’s adaptability. Florida’s outdoor season typically spans spring through summer, culminating in the Florida state championship.

Youth Development: From JOAD to Olympic

USA Archery’s youth pipeline is called JOAD — Junior Olympic Archery Development. JOAD archers, typically ages 8–18, compete in age-appropriate divisions and track their progress through levels. The top JOAD archers feed into Junior National Teams, and from there, elite archers pursue Olympic Trials and international representation.

Sarasota Archery Academy’s X-Ring Program welcomes JOAD-eligible youth. Our NTS-certified coaching creates a structured pathway: master fundamentals, develop the shot cycle, compete locally in Florida, and pursue regional and national advancement for athletes with the discipline and talent to reach that level.

USA Archery Competitive Formats

USA Archery athletes compete in two primary formats. Sarasota Archery Academy’s X-Ring Program trains in both.

🎯

Indoor 18-Meter (3-Spot)

Precision is paramount at 18 meters. Athletes shoot at a 3-spot target face, firing 60 arrows in timed ends. The X-ring (the innermost 10-ring zone) counts separately, rewarding tight groups and flawless form. The controlled indoor environment eliminates wind and weather, isolating the shooter’s technique.

Florida Season: November–February. Venue: Indoor facility. State Event: Florida Indoor State Championship.

This format is where technical precision is built. Sarasota Archery Academy’s X-Ring Program emphasizes indoor training year-round, with structured sessions Monday and Thursday evenings.

☀️

Outdoor 720-Round

The 720-round is the Olympic-distance format. Youth archers typically shoot at 60 meters; seniors and national-level athletes shoot at 70 meters (the Olympic distance). Athletes fire 72 arrows over a match, with a maximum score of 720 points. Wind, sun angle, and environmental adaptation become critical.

Florida Season: Spring–Summer. State Event: Florida Outdoor State Championship. Top Athletes: May qualify for regional and national events.

Outdoor competition tests an archer’s ability to adjust form and aim under changing conditions. This is where Florida archers prove their skill against competitors across the region.

🏅

State & National Championships

USA Archery hosts state-level championships in both indoor and outdoor formats. Florida archers compete for state titles and qualification to regional and national events. The top athletes from Sarasota, Bradenton, Venice, and across southwest Florida gather to test themselves at championship venues.

Advantage for NTS Archers: Athletes trained in the National Training System have a technical edge. Their form is biomechanically sound and repeatable under pressure — qualities that distinguish state and national competitors from recreational archers.

Sarasota Archery Academy aims to field competitive teams at Florida state championships. Our NTS-certified coaching prepares archers for the demands of high-level competition.

NTS-Certified Coaching at Sarasota Archery Academy

Rob Gilbert holds a USA Archery Level 3 NTS certification — the highest coaching level in the USA Archery system. Our entire coaching staff is USA Archery certified.

Advanced private archery coaching using NTS instruction at Sarasota Archery Academy

NTS coaching is fundamentally different from casual instruction. It’s biomechanics-based, data-driven, and repeatable. When you train under NTS methodology, you’re learning the same technique framework used by USA Archery national teams and Olympic athletes.

At Sarasota Archery Academy, our coaching staff uses video analysis, form feedback, and the NTS “shot cycle” to build your consistency. The shot cycle is a choreographed sequence: how you stand, how you draw, where your anchor point sits, how you aim, and how you release. Master this cycle under NTS coaching, and you’ll hold your form whether you’re shooting in practice or at the Florida state championship.

Why NTS Matters at Competition Level: Athletes without NTS-based training often develop form inconsistencies that emerge under pressure. In competition, when adrenaline spikes and stakes matter, sloppy form breaks down. NTS-trained archers have a repeatable, biomechanically sound process that holds. This is the technical advantage that separates state-level archers from recreational shooters.

USA Archery Training in Florida — Questions & Answers

The National Training System is a biomechanics-based coaching framework developed by USA Archery to standardize technique across all certified coaches. NTS breaks the archery shot into precise phases: stance, nocking, drawing, anchoring, aiming, and release. Each phase has technical standards based on sports science. Training under NTS-certified coaches ensures you learn the same technique framework used by USA Archery national teams and Olympic athletes. This consistency is critical for competition success — proper NTS form holds under pressure, while casual technique often breaks down in high-stakes matches.

USA Archery and ASA (Archery Shooters Association) are two distinct archery disciplines. USA Archery focuses on Olympic-style target archery — standardized distances (18 meters indoors, 70 meters outdoors for Olympic divisions), precision scoring, and technique standardization through NTS coaching. ASA 3D emphasizes 3D courses in outdoor settings with life-sized animal targets at varying distances, emphasizing field skills and hunting applications.

Sarasota Archery Academy’s X-Ring Program specializes in USA Archery format. We also offer our Upper 12’s Program in ASA 3D format ($300/month). Most competitive youth archers serious about Olympic-pathway development start with USA Archery.

JOAD stands for Junior Olympic Archery Development. It’s USA Archery’s youth pipeline for developing competitive archers ages typically 8–18. JOAD athletes compete in age-appropriate divisions, earn levels based on skill progression, and track their advancement through the system. The top JOAD archers feed into Junior National Teams, and from there, elite athletes pursue Olympic Trials and international competition.

Sarasota Archery Academy’s X-Ring Program welcomes JOAD-eligible youth. Our NTS-certified coaching creates a structured pathway to help young archers progress from fundamentals through competitive advancement.

USA Archery indoor competition uses a 3-spot target face at 18 meters. Archers fire 60 arrows in timed ends (typically 3-4 arrows per minute), targeting the innermost rings for maximum points. The X-ring (the very center zone within the 10-ring) counts separately from the 10-ring, rewarding precision. A perfect score indoors is 600 points (if all 60 arrows are 10s) or higher if all arrows are X-rings.

The tight scoring — where even 1–2 millimeters of form deviation costs points — means indoor archery emphasizes technical precision. This is why NTS-based coaching matters so much. Sarasota Archery Academy trains X-Ring Program athletes year-round in indoor format to build the form consistency needed for competitive success.

Sarasota Archery Academy targets the Florida Indoor State Championship (typically November–February season) and the Florida Outdoor State Championship (spring–summer season). These are the primary competitive venues for Florida USA Archery athletes. Top-performing archers may also qualify for regional and national USA Archery events.

Our X-Ring Program prepares athletes specifically for Florida state competition. We compete alongside archers from Bradenton, Venice, Lakewood Ranch, North Port, and across southwest Florida. The more competitive athletes reach for regional and national advancement.

Visit our Join page to learn about the tryout process. We welcome archers ages 8 and up — youth through adult — with or without prior archery experience.
